“very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie”

Olivia Thirlby has been in a lot of films (Juno, The Wackness, Solitary Man) and she has a lead role in Summit’s upcoming alien invasion film The Darkest Hour, but Variety is reporting she has just been cast as Cassandra Anderson in DNA Films’ 3D adaptation of Judge Dredd. It was revealed during Comic-Con, then confirmed later, that Karl Urban will star as the titular Judge Dredd, while Thirlby will be playing a telepathic rookie who shadows Dredd, as seen in the comics. Shooting begins in South Africa late this year.

Judge Dredd is being directed by Vantage Point and Omagh director Pete Travis from a script written by Sunshine and 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland. The $45 million futuristic flick is financed by Reliance Big Entertainment and Stuart Ford’s IM Global through a deal with Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich’s DNA Films. It was confirmed a few weeks ago that this will be a “very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie” and that Dredd’s helmet won’t ever come off.
